Women's Basketball erupts for blowout win at Wilmington
WILMINGTON, Delaware – The American International College women's basketball team picked up a one-sided win, hammering Wilmington University for an 89-40 victory on Friday, December 20.
AIC is now 7-4 on the season.
Both teams hit multiple threes in the first three minute, with triples by Peyton Grant and Ruzgar Christina Boyle for AIC; the duo then repeated on back-to-back possessions to turn a 10-8 AIC deficit into a 14-10 lead. From there, AIC's offense kept rolling, with Boyle splashing another from deep followed by three makes out of the hand of Eden Monka. The Yellow Jackets ultimately carried a 27-15 advantage into the first stoppage.
Free throws accounted for AIC's first four points of the second quarter, before Boyle knocked in a pair of jumpers to put the Yellow Jackets ahead by 20. It only built from there, with Sarai Gurley putting away a layup to force a Wilmington timeout. The hosts did score the next two points via free throws, but the Yellow Jackets closed out the scoring with a Gurley swipe-and-score and five free throws of their own, sending the team to the locker room up 44-17.
Boyle started AIC off strong in the third with back-to-back makes, expanding the lead beyond 30 in the first minute. Keyvanna Bennett added to AIC's totals with a pair of makes of her own, and Monka and Boyle kept tacking on points, as did Heaven Morris, who also set up Ahliya Phillips for a three with 46 seconds to play in the frame that extended the edge to an even 40, at 66-26.
AIC had all but put the game away already, but Grant buried a three and Jasmine Love knocked down a layup to keep it rolling. Gurley later had a swipe and score through contact, finishing the and-one with 6:18 to go to put the Yellow Jackets up by 50, 79-29. Shortly after, a Morris-to-Love finish made it 85-34 and then a Love-to-Bryant bucket put AIC ahead 87-35, the largest lead of the game at 52. Alicia Aznar Chamorro's putback was the game's final bucket in the 89-40 victory.
Boyle led all scorers with 22 points, hitting eight field goals including four from deep. Grant also made four threes for her 12 points, while Monka scored 15. Rhaymi Porter did not score, but her defense was a significant factor as she grabbed seven boards and generated three blocks, three assists, and two steals. Gurley notched seven points and four swipes.
The 49-point final margin of victory was AIC's largest in over a decade. The last time the women's basketball program had a bigger win by points came when AIC defeated Felician University 85-33 on November 10, 2012, 4423 days ago.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Yellow Jackets, who next face Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday, December 21 at 1:00 p.m.
