Women's Volleyball continues torrid pace, sweeps Saint Anselm
MANCHESTER, New Hampshire – The American International College women's volleyball team kept its roll going into November, sweeping Saint Anselm College 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 in Northeast-10 Conference play on Friday, November 1.
AIC is now 12-6 overall with a 7-0 NE10 mark.
Points came from everywhere early for the Yellow Jackets as the team built a quick four-point advantage, and another run of four straight mid-set put AIC up 15-9. From there, it was simply a matter of closing strong, and AIC did, with Carissa Michel firing a Victoria Mendez pass to the wood to end the first.
The second set saw early surges by both sides before AIC began pulling away thanks to three straight Hawks errors; two were blocks by Mendez and then Aleksandra Lucic. Shortly after, Lucic and Michel sent the ball down for kills, putting AIC ahead 15-9 again. A subsequent five-point run made of two kills each by Mendez and Jelena Milovanovic and a Daniella Russo-Lolas ace effectively put the set away, and Milovanovic scored the final kill to end it.
Now in control, AIC dodged an early run by the Hawks with a stretch of eight out of nine points to flip a 13-10 deficit to an 18-14 lead. AIC had the match in its sights and finished strong, with Alice Di Francesco's pass to Mendez for the final swing putting a bow on the 3-0 victory.
Mendez led AIC with 11 kills and also compiled 17 assists, balancing against Di Francesco's 20 helpers. Lucic had seven kills, hitting .636 for the match as she went errorless on the attack, and also made eight digs. Perla Rosa led the match with 18 digs.
AIC next takes the court on Wednesday, November 6 for a nonconference home match against Mercy University at 7:00 p.m.
