
PERFECTION! Women's Rugby routs New Haven, completes undefeated NIRA DII regular season
NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – For the first time in program history, the American International College women's rugby team has completed its National Intercollegiate Rugby Association Division II regular season schedule undefeated and untied, finishing a perfect 4-0 campaign with a 111-24 victory over the University of New Haven on Sunday, November 3.
AIC's overall record for the year stands at 5-2.
The Yellow Jackets wanted to leave no doubt and quickly built a massive lead, with Mahina Hafoka opening the scoring in the fourth minute and Camryn Henderson putting a pair of tries down for a 15-0 lead.
Naomi Dodd then broke through for a score, and Henderson completed a hat trick at the 14:05 mark. Isa Van de Zand converted each of the latter two tries as well, giving AIC a 29-0 lead just 15 minutes in.
Sara Doyle tacked on a try in the 18th minute before the Chargers finally connected, with Lexi Byrne breaking the shutout in the 22nd minute. Jendell Moe and Van de Zand both countered with tries for the Yellow Jackets, with a Van de Zand conversion extending the lead to 46-5.
Sereana Vulaono took charge of the game for New Haven, catching a kick and bursting forward to score, and then repeating the process less than three minutes later, with Sydney Dela Cruz converting to shrink AIC's lead to 46-17. However, the Yellow Jackets closed out the half strong, with Moe blasting through the New Haven defense for a score and Dodd flying through as well. Van de Zand's conversion kick flew through at the expiration of the half and put AIC up 58-17.
Out of the stoppage, AIC continued to pile on. Ro'Elenoa Lagilagi found her way onto the scoresheet, and then Henderson put down another pair that both came with Van de Zand conversions. Dodd then outran the defense before flipping the ball to Mariah Cuarenta at the goal line for another try, giving AIC 24 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half and an 82-17 lead.
Van de Zand kept the run going with a try, and Angel Davis and Kiyanah Edwards both touched the ball to the turf, with Van de Zand converting the latter for AIC's 99th point. Lala Guimaraes broke AIC's streak with a try and Dela Cruz converted, cutting the Yellow Jackets advantage to 75.
Venise Sanft put home a try in the 69th minute to break the 100-point mark for AIC, and Hafoka closed out AIC's try scoring in the 76th minute, with Sanft nailing a tough-angle conversion. Guimaraes scored the game's last try in the 79th minute for the 111-29 final.
AIC will host Frostburg State University in the NIRA Division II Semifinal on Sunday, November 17 at Ronald J. Abdow Field. Game time is to be determined.
