Women's Basketball edged out by Pace
PLEASANTVILLE, New York - The American International College women's basketball team came up one shot short in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Pace University on Wednesday, December 4, falling 54-52 to the Setters.
AIC is now 4-3 overall and 0-3 in the NE10.
The back-and-forth started quickly, with each team taking and giving back the lead in the first 2:18; Peyton Grant and Ruzgar Christina Boyle hit AIC's field goals. The pattern repeated again, with Chelsea Reeves sinking two for AIC, before Pace finally broke the trend and scored on consecutive possessions. Ultimately, the four-point lead was what the Setters took into the first stoppage, as an Arianna Stockinger layup gave the home team a 17-13 advantage through 10 minutes.
Buckets kept falling for both sides, with several deep shots on each end as well as layups, in the second quarter. Pace maintained its place in the lead throughout, but Ahliya Phillips finished a Reeves pass with 1:01 to play that cut that lead to just one, and a single free throw meant the Setters only took a 31-29 lead to the locker room at halftime.
Free throws accounted for all of the scoring in the third until Keyvanna Bennett put a field goal home from Rhaymi Porter just shy of the four-minute mark. The offenses picked up somewhat after that, and Boyle knocked down a mid-range jumper late in the third to leave AIC down 44-42 with one frame left.
In the final period, AIC pushed, but every field goal was countered; Boyle knocked in a triple midway through the period to bring AIC within one, and repeated that with 2:28 to go, but the Yellow Jackets could not find the basket again, ultimately dropping the 54-52 result.
Boyle notched a game-best 16 on 7-of-11 shooting, while Reeves chipped in a dozen. Bennett led the Yellow Jackets with 10 rebounds, and Porter grabbed five boards while dishing five assists and adding a pair of steals and blocks.
The Yellow Jackets will look to bounce back at home on Saturday, December 7 at 1:30 p.m. against the University of New Haven.
