SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College men's basketball team fell 86-57 to the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday, December 7.
AIC is now 1-8 overall and 1-3 in the NE10.
The Yellow Jackets won the tip and Justice Ellison opened the scoring, but the Chargers scored the next six points to take the lead. After Lovre Zaja set up Abddullah Mahamed for a bucket, the Chargers responded with a triple to take a 9-4 advantage just past the five-minute mark. Both teams hit some shots, but Mohamed Traore sank a three at 11:07 to expand the lead for the Chargers to 19-11, sparking a 17-point run that ended when Mahamed made a layup through contact with 4:01 left in the half that had New Haven still up 33-13. At the break, the Charger lead was 42-23.
Though the second half was closer, AIC was not able to dig out of the hole it was in. Ellison and Tyrae Washington each went 3-of-4 from the field in the period, and Jack Hall put through four of his five shots, but the Chargers went 7-of-12 from deep in the final 20 minutes to ensure a New Haven win. Hall ultimately led AIC with 12 points, while Ellison had 11. Buke Peirkishvili dished seven assists and grabbed seven rebounds in the setback.
AIC will look to rebound in a nonconference game at Felician University on Tuesday, December 10 at 7:00 p.m.
