Women's Volleyball cages Lions, advances to East Region Championship
WALTHAM, Massachusetts - The American International College women's volleyball team made quick work of Georgian Court University in the NCAA Division II East Region Semifinal, advancing to the Regional Championship with a 25-17, 25-12, 25-14 victory on Friday, December 6.
AIC improves to 21-6 on the season.
The early going was back-and-forth, as the Lions scored five of six to take a 6-4 lead, taking advantage of AIC errors and two Nylene Mateo kills. Victoria Mendez broke the run, and shortly after Aleksandra Lucic scored three straight with two kills and a block, starting a stretch where AIC built to a 21-14 lead. The Yellow Jackets sealed the set win with the final four points, with a combo block by Lucic and Janelys Perez Cortes, a Perla Rosa ace, and a Carissa Michel kill finishing it off.
Gabryela Castro de Jesus posted a pair of early kills to help AIC to a 5-1 second-set lead. The Lions never were able to get their offense going at full speed thereafter, and the Yellow Jackets piled up points in bunches to expand their lead to double digits. Ultimately, the final point in the set came off the hand of Chelsa Foulis, who smacked a pass from Alice Di Francesco to the wood for set point.
Advancement was in sight as the third set started, and Perez Cortes put the first two hits to the floor to start AIC off strong. The Lions rebounded, taking a 5-4 lead, and led 9-7 before Perez Cortes neutralized the advantage with another pair of solid swings. Rosa aced another serve, and AIC did not trail again. A Victoria Soto Burgos kill at 15-13 sparked a nine-point run that featured multiple kills by Castro de Jesus and Foulis, and though the Lions did snap the streak, the 24-14 gap was insurmountable, and an attack error closed out AIC's second sweep of the Regional.
AIC's top attacker was Perez Cortes, who piled up 10 kills on 19 swings to hit .474; Lucic scored six kills on 10 swings and went .500 on attack. Di Francesco passeed out 21 assists and made seven digs, with Mendez compiling nine kills, 14 assists, and eight digs. Rosa's 14 digs led the match as well.
AIC awaits the winner of the Adelphi University versus Bentley University matchup; the Yellow Jackets will play either the Panthers or Falcons at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 7 in Waltham, Massachusetts at Bentley's Dana Center.
