Men's Basketball loses OT heartbreaker to Post
SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - In a game where momentum twisted in all directions, the American International College men's basketball team fell in extra time, 92-83, on Wednesday, December 18 against Post University.
AIC is now 1-10 on the season.
TyRae Washington scored the game's first bucket by putting back an Abdullah Mahamed shot, then stuffed the Post attempt at the other end before setting Mahamed up for a breakout basket. The Eagles knocked down a three, which was quickly countered with one by Jack Hall off a Lovre Zaja feed. Post bounced back, ultimately taking a 10-9 lead before the teams traded baskets, with Justice Ellison and Hall both connecting. Reece Brown later put in a three, expanding the AIC advantage, as did Chase Nelson, and Washington knocked down two free throws at the midway mark, putting AIC ahead 26-20.
Post neutralized the lead with a six-point run before Washington hit a shot, and AIC held the Eagles at bay for the next five minutes, thanks in part to five straight points by Hall. He hit his fourth three with 1:48 to play in the half, but the Eagles knocked in the final five of the half, sending both teams to the locker room tied at 40.
The back-and-forth was no different in the second half; AIC built a five-point lead after Zaja set up Ellison for a three, and the duo flipped the order, with Ellison finding Zaja wide open at the top of the arc for a triple that put AIC ahead 57-46 with 14:32 to play. However, AIC only hit one field goal in the next stretch, allowing Deng Deang to tie the game at 59-59 just after the midpoint of the half.
AIC again scored a few baskets to gain the lead, and Post again battled back; Taquan Williams put the Eagles on top 72-71 with 3:01 to play, but Ellison scored through contact by Williams on the next possession for an old-school three of his own, the first of seven straight AIC points by the Northeast-10 Conference's leading scorer.
Up 78-76, AIC drew free throws with three seconds to play; Buka Peikrishvili sank one, and the Yellow Jackets fouled to prevent a tying three-point attempt. Post made one, but then committed a lane violation to negate the second. AIC then drew another foul with 1.8 left on the clock, missing both free throws, and a foul on the inbound pass put Deang back at the line. He hit both, stunningly tying the game and forcing overtime.
In the extra session, Deng hit an open three, and the Eagles never trailed again; AIC notched just one field goal in the bonus minutes as Post took the 92-83 victory.
Ellison and Hall both broke 20, with Ellison's 24 leading AIC, and Washington posted an impressive line of 13 points, 11 boards, four assists, and three blocks. Mahamed also reached double digits with 11 points.
The Yellow Jackets next visit the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday, December 21 at 3:15 p.m.
