Men's Rugby douses Iona in regular season finale
SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College men's rugby team roared past Iona College, 53-10, in Liberty Rugby Conference play on Saturday, November 2.
AIC's regular season record stands at 7-1, all in LRC action.
The Gaels scored the game's first points on a penalty kick less than two minutes in. AIC answered quickly, as Demitrius Ta'ape scored and German Rossi added a conversion, putting AIC ahead 7-3 five minutes into the match.
Juan Mateo Carrazana expanded AIC's lead, breaking over the line for a try in the 13th minute, and just past the midpoint of the half, Mateo Castro also scored for the Yellow Jackets. Rossi completed the conversion on Castro's score to put AIC up 19-3.
Two yellow cards in rapid succession put the Yellow Jackets short two players, and the Gaels capitalized, with a try and conversion in the 33rd minute. However, Ramiro Mendez de Olivera broke through the Iona defense just shy of the halftime break, and AIC led 24-10 as a result.
The Yellow Jackets put the game out of reach with three tries in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Filimone Manu, Carrazana, and Dalvin Paki each touched the ball down beyond the line to push AIC's edge to 41-10.
In the final 11 minutes, two more players got onto the scoresheet, the last of which was by Liyema Liwani with a try for the 53-10 final.
AIC awaits the postseason selection announcement from National Collegiate Rugby to learn its next opponent.
