Women's Basketball buzzes past Bridgeport
BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut – The American International College women's basketball team won every quarter en route to a 70-48 victory over the University of Bridgeport on Saturday, November 23.
AIC is now 4-1 overall.
Bridgeport hit the first shots of the game, and the lead swapped several times, with AIC going ahead on two different occasions thanks to threes by Ruzgar Christina Boyle. Back-to-back buckets by Ahliya Phillips pushed AIC's edge to 15-8, but the Purple Knights fought back, and a late and-one by Niyah Whitten left the Yellow Jackets up just 15-13 at the first stoppage.
Eden Monka expanded AIC's lead with the first two makes of the second frame, and the back-and-forth saw the game stay close, although back-to-back triples by Peyton Grant, both set up by Rhaymi Porter, helped the Yellow Jackets retain the lead. At the half, AIC led 32-27.
The Purple Knights roared out of halftime to retake the lead, only to immediately give it back as Boyle drained another clutch three, and then hit another on the next possession to force a home timeout. The halt to play did nothing to blunt AIC's momentum, as Keyvanna Bennett and Chelsea Reeves led a run that put the Yellow Jackets ahead 51-40 going into the final frame.
The lead ballooned in the fourth, as Reeves scored five straight to open the final period and Grant knocked in a triple. A Bennett layup gave AIC a 21-point advantage and forced another Bridgeport timeout. From there, however, AIC was able to simple cruise, hitting the shots necessary down the stretch to prevent a comeback and earn a 70-48 win.
Boyle led AIC with 17 points, with all five of her field goals coming from deep. Reeves and Bennett each scored 11, with Monka and Grant scoring nine. Porter grabbed 10 boards, dished four assists, and blocked three shots.
AIC returns to Northeast-10 Conference play at Bentley University on Tuesday, November 26 at 5:30 p.m.
