Women's Basketball surges in second half to stop Chargers
WEST HAVEN, Connecticut - A stretch of 31-7 early in the second half propelled the American International College women's basketball team to a 70-56 Northeast-10 Conference win on the road at the University of New Haven on Saturday, February 8.
AIC is now 11-12 overall and 4-11 in the NE10.
Threes kept AIC in the game in the first quarter; although the Yellow Jackets only scored once from inside the arc - their last point of the quarter came on an Eden Monka free throw - Chelsea Reeves hit an early three, followed by two out of the hands of Ruzgar Christina Boyle, and finally one by Peyton Grant, to keep AIC within five at the break, trailing 18-13.
The Yellow Jackets began connecting inside the arc early in the second, as Grant finished after a Boyle steal in the first 45 seconds, and scored 10 straight points total, with six at the line, to take a 23-18 lead. However, the Chargers quickly answered with a pair of threes. The squads went back-and-forth from there to the end of the quarter, with Grant and Keyvanna Bennett hitting tying shots. New Haven led 30-29 at the halftime stoppage.
AIC took control in the third quarter. Although the Chargers started the scoring with free throws, back-to-back and-ones by Ahliya Phillips put AIC back on top. Phillips then set up Rhaymi Porter before knocking in another of her own, and Monka extended the lead to 40-33. AIC scored seven of the final nine in the frame, closing with a deep three from Reeves, and led 47-35 half an hour in.
Porter found Reeves to open the fourth and then Reeves set up Boyle from deep; Bennett then scored before Reeves dropped another triple to push the lead to 22, at 57-35. The Yellow Jackets closed it out strong, with four points from Sarai Gurley and five more from Reeves, and were able to empty the bench in the 70-56 win.
Reeves was the offensive leader for AIC with 19 points, followed by 13 by Bennett; eight Yellow Jackets recorded four or more points in the win.
The Yellow Jackets return to action in New Haven on Tuesday, February 11 at Southern Connecticut State University at 5:30 p.m.
