Porter makes 200th career block in Women's Basketball setback at Assumption
WORCESTER, Massachusetts - In a game where makes were difficult to come by, the American International College women's basketball team fell 59-36 to Assumption University in Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday, February 19.
AIC is now 12-14 overall and 5-13 in the NE10.
Rhaymi Porter started the offenses off, scoring on the first play of the game by battling through the defense for a shot inside the paint. Keyvanna Bennett and Ahliya Phillips also hit shots early, keeping the score tied 6-6 before the three-minute mark. From there, however, both teams made just two field goals each until the buzzer, when Laura Johnson-Shedd hit a shot to give Assumption a 14-10 lead through one.
Molly Stokes opened the second with a triple, the lone score until Porter notched three of her own with an and-one nearly two and a half minutes deep. The next field goal was Alicia Aznar Chamorro, nearly at the midpoint of the period, tying the game 17-17. From there, Assumption rattled off 12 straight points, but eight of those came at the stripe, before Chelsea Reeves scored AIC's next bucket with 51 seconds left in the half. AIC trailed 31-19 at the stoppage.
Reeves knocked in a two and a three in the first minutes of the third to shrink AIC's deficit, but the offense continued to struggle from there, with just three more points in the frame, all at the line. Assumption was able to expand its advantage to 48-27 after 30 minutes, and Assumption held on to earn a 59-36 win.
Reeves led AIC with 11 points, while Porter posted 11 rebounds and three blocks; her stuff of an Olivia Found attempt late in the fourth quarter was the 200th block she has made in her NCAA career.
The Yellow Jackets will celebrate Senior Day with their next game, a home tilt against Bentley University at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 22.
