WEST POINT, New York - On the night of its final regular season home game, Army West Point celebrated the career of its retiring head ice hockey coach Brian Riley, signaling the end of a 75-year long era at the United States Military Academy. The American International College ice hockey team extended that game a few minutes longer, tying the contest with an extra attacker before ultimately falling 3-2 in overtime on Saturday, February 22 in Atlantic Hockey America play.
AIC is now 11-20-2 overall with a 9-15-1-0-0-3 AHA mark.
The Yellow Jackets struck first midway through the first as Brett Rylance and Casey McDonald broke into the Army end on a two-on-one; Rylance was able to rip a wrist shot over Evan Szary's shoulder at 7:40 for his second goal of the season.
The Black Knights took control from there, and pounded shot after shot on goal, with Chase Clark making numerous saves. In the second period alone, he made 19 stops, and had 27 through two frames.
In the third, Army finally was able to break through, as Jack Ivey finished a scoring chance at 4:05 on a play at the netfront, and at 8:55, Joey Baez whipped home a rebound to give the home squad a 2-1 lead.
The emotions in the building built up as Army fans waited to send off their coach with a win, but the Yellow Jackets had no intention of simply letting them have it. The team pulled Clark for a sixth attacker, and Evan Stella's point shot was deflected by Josh Barnes off of Evan Szary. The rebound flipped into the slot, and John Lundy batted it out of the air for his eighth of the season at 18:51.
However, while the goal snared AIC a point, the Yellow Jackets could not get the second; Vincent Salice scored the winner in the 3-on-3 extra session at 2:36.
Clark made 36 saves in the setback.
AIC closes the regular season for the AHA with a makeup game at the College of the Holy Cross on Monday, February 24 at 7:05 p.m.
