MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina – The American International College baseball team dominated on the bump, with Tim Krol and Hayden Mutz both going the distance in 10-2 and 2-1 seven-inning wins over the University of Bridgeport on Saturday, March 1.
AIC is now 4-3 on the season.
The Purple Knights scored twice in the first four batters, with a double, single, and single plus an error lifting them to a 2-0 lead.
That lasted until the third inning, when AIC's bats woke up in a big way. Cole Patterson smashed his first collegiate home run, a solo shot to right, and after Brendan Edvardsen worked a walk, Leandro Guevara connected and launched one to center for a two-run blast, his first of the season, to put AIC ahead.
The Yellow Jackets cruised from there, and scored three times in the fifth with a Guevara sacrifice fly, a Nick Serce RBI double, and a Josh Frometa RBI single. They tacked on four more in the sixth to put the game away, with a Sam Tanous RBI double, a three-base error, and another Frometa RBI single, closing the scoring in the 10-2 win.
After the early two, Tim Krol did not allow a run across his final six frames of work, scattering eight total hits and striking out eight in the complete-game win.
In the second game, AIC opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, with Yeudy Ramirez doubling two batters after Frometa to drive him in, and in the third, Patterson and Edvardsen both singled, allowing Tanous to push Patterson home with a groundout to second.
That was all the offense AIC needed as Hayden Mutz delivered a gem, allowing a solo home run in the fourth but only one other hit. The senior struck out seven batters in the complete-game victory, his second straight start going seven innings and allowing one run.
The two teams will finish the weekend in South Carolina with a 9:00 a.m. start on Sunday, March 2.
