Baseball opens Bridgeport series with high-scoring win; Edvardsen collects 100th career hit
MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina – The American International College baseball team racked up a double-digit run total in an 11-8 win over the University of Bridgeport on Friday, February 28 at the Ripken Experience.
AIC is now 2-3 on the season.
The Yellow Jackets exploded right out of the gate with walks by Brendan Edvardsen, Leandro Guevara, and Nick Serce. Josh Frometa made the Purple Knights pay, socking a triple to center to bring them all home.
In the second, Richie Segura led off with a double, and after a Cole Patterson walk, Edvardsen smacked a single to left to drive Segura in. He swiped second and scored on an RBI single by Serce after Guevara reached by being hit by a pitch. Guevara ultimately scored as well, taking advantage of a passed ball, giving AIC a 6-0 lead.
After Bridgeport pushed two across, Yeudy Ramirez worked a third-frame walk and then beat out a grounder to prevent a double play. That proved costly for Bridgeport, as he scored on a Patterson single.
Once more, Bridgeport added two in the bottom half, and another in the fourth, but AIC answered in the fifth. Edvardsen came to the dish with two on and two out and drilled a double to score both runners.
The Purple Knights scored two in the eighth, but AIC wiped them away in the ninth, as Kiernan Caffrey led off with a double, and Ramirez singled to drive him in. He stole second and scored on Edvardsen's fourth hit of the game, a single to right, and AIC held on for the win.
Vaughn O'Leary earned the win, going 5.0 innings and allowing four earned; Romel Roca picked up a save with a four-inning relief appearance.
The second-inning single by Edvardsen was more than just an RBI hit; it marked the 100th NCAA hit of his career.
The teams will next play a twinbill beginning at noon on Saturday, March 1.
