Post edges out men's lacrosse
WATERBURY, Connecticut - It came down to the final play of the game, but the American International College men's lacrosse team fell just short, 12-11, to Post University on Wednesday, March 5.
AIC is now 1-2 on the season.
Carter Linkletter found Jordan Boyenko open in the middle for the game's first goal just 59 seconds in, but the Eagles countered with a pair of goals for a 2-1 lead before six minutes had elapsed. AIC quickly rebounded, with Tyler Goode connecting with Hunter Terlik for a strike at 6:10, and late in the period, Goode set up Cole Gaudet for a step-down snipe, giving AIC a 3-2 lead after one.
The only goal of the second period belonged to the Eagles, with Leighton Cooke scoring at 5:05, as the goalkeepers stole the show; Logan Dobrowski and Liam McCurry made four saves each for AIC and Post respectively, and Nicholas Kendall, who had to play the final two minutes after a hit knocked Dobrowski's helmet off, stopped the lone shot he faced to keep the score 3-3 at the break.
The third frame saw much more offense. The Eagles hit the net just 24 seconds in, but AIC countered with three straight, as Seven Gillingham set up Gaudet and then scored one of his own, bookending a goal by Linkletter, and giving AIC a 6-4 lead. The Eagles scored three of the next four, however, broken only by Terlik's man-up make off a pass from Boyenko, and the final goal, scored with one second left, also featured an AIC penalty that left the Yellow Jackets shorthanded to start the fourth frame of a 7-7 game.
Post quickly converted on the man-up, but a pair of penalties of their own put AIC in control, and the Yellow Jackets tied it as Gillingham got loose on the right side. Post scored two quick goals in response, but Gillingham passed to Goode for a response goal, and Goode then set up Jordan Boyenko to tie the game with 7:31 left. Post retook a two-goal lead with 4:02 to play, and led by that margin in the final minute. Goode, off a feed from Terlik, scored a behind-the-back goal from the left slot to pull AIC within one, and the Yellow Jackets had one more possession before the clock expired, but could not convert again.
Dobrowski totaled a dozen saves in the setback. Goode led AIC with five points, and four players had at least three points. Linkletter forced six turnovers.
AIC will next head to Caldwell University for a makeup game on Monday, March 10 at 4:00 p.m.
