Nichols places second at Super Regional, qualifies for Wrestling Nationals
FAIRMONT, West Virginia - Tommy Nichols finished on the podium and punched a ticket to the 2025 NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championship with a second-place finish in the 157-pound weight class at the 2025 Super Region I Championship hosted by Fairmont State University on Saturday, March 1.
All three of Nichols' bouts were close. He opened with an 8-4 decision over Ali Alicea of Kutztown University and followed by taking a 7-3 decision against Cooper Warshel of the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. In the final, he came up just short, losing 4-2 to Mike Zacur of Seton Hill University. Still, by reaching the title bout, he guaranteed a spot in the national tournament, where the top three wrestlers from each of the six regionals advance.
Jack MacKiernan came within moments of earning a spot as well, ultimately dropping the third-place match at 184 6-5 to Austin Gibson of Fairmont State on a last-second takedown. He had reached the third-place bout with a pin of Felician University's Jared Tracey, a 5-3 decision against Cole Dubois of Millersville University, and then another win, this time a 9-4 decision, against Tracey.
Daniel McLaughlin earned a 17-0 technical fall win against Fairmont State's Caden Delwarte at 125, Markys Lissaint pinned Felician's Williams Larosiliere and took a 7-3 decision against Fairmont State's Makiya Powell at 174, and Darby McLaughlin needed just 36 seconds to pin Chris Johnson of Wheeling University at 197.
Nichols will compete for a national title on March 14- 15 at Corteva Coliseum in Indianapolis, Indiana.
