Women's Lacrosse outscores Caldwell in offensive battle
SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – The American International College women's lacrosse team defeated Caldwell University 18-15 on Tuesday, March 11.
AIC is now 2-4 on the season.
Gabrielle Walz found Isabelle Stone open for the game's first goal just 28 seconds in, but the Cougars scored the next three before committing a penalty, which allowed Jordyn Galgay to connect with Mackenna Donohue for a goal at 5:45. The Cougars scored for a 4-2 lead, but down the stretch AIC rallied back, with Stone scoring unassisted and then Robin Trombly and Galgay each setting the other up for a finish, giving AIC a 5-4 lead through one.
Caldwell notched two goals in the first 53 seconds of the second to retake the lead, but AIC countered with four goals in a 2:03 stretch, as Stone scored and Walz netted two, with Stone setting up the latter, and then Trombly scored on a free position shot. The Cougars had no intention of letting AIC run away with the game, and scored three goals late in the half, with two in the final minute, although Galgay also set up Donohue in the last minute, leaving AIC ahead by a 10-9 margin.
AIC started the third on a man up, and Sophia Sellins took advantage to strike just seven seconds in, and ten seconds later Walz found Galgay for another tally. Walz added an unassisted goal to build the lead further, and notched another shortly after a Caldwell tally. The Cougars netted two more in the period, keeping close as AIC led 14-12 after 45 minutes.
The back-and-forth continued, with Kathryn Letteri scoring the final frame's first tally from Trombly. Every goal was answered by the other team, with AIC's next goal coming man-down on a brilliant finish by Galgay from Stone; Galgay also scored AIC's penultimate goal on a free position before Trombly set up Donohue to cap her had trick with the final score in the 18-15 win.
In goal, Maggie Kloster was fantastic, turning back 18 shots in the win. Galgay led AIC with seven points, while Walz scored six and Trombly and Stone each generated five; Stone also snared four ground balls and caused four turnovers.
AIC returns to action quickly, with D'Youville University visiting Abdow Field on Thursday, March 13 at 1:00 PM.
