CLERMONT, Florida - The American International College softball team stunned Shepherd University with a 3-run seventh to win 7-6 before falling 7-0 to Indiana University of Pennsylvania to finish its week in Florida on Friday, March 15.
AIC is now 3-5 to start the season.
The Yellow Jackets struck first in the third inning with back-to-back hits by Lauryn Ramalho and Nevaeh Trejo, with Ramalho scampering home on the rookie's single to left. However, a three-run double and a defensive miscue by AIC in the bottom half put the Rams up 4-1.
AIC roared back in the fifth. Destiny McGrath and Sammy Sanchez walked, and Julia Krijgsman smacked a double to score them both. After Morgan Bemont walked, Jilien Ayala singled through the middle to score Krijgsman and tie the game.
In the sixth, the Rams retook the lead, with a leadoff triple, a single, and a double plating a pair. The damage could have been worse, with the Rams loading the bases with one out, but Trinity LaValley induced a popout and a flyout to stifle the threat.
With just three outs left, AIC went to work in the seventh. Brooklyn Cividanes laid down a bunt single and then Bemont walked, bringing Ayala to the dish. She drove the ball down the left field line, scoring two, and then came home on a Brianna Salazar infield single, dodging the tag at home plate to give AIC a 7-6 lead.
From there, LaValley shut it down, allowing a one-out single but putting away the final three outs for the win.
IUP broke AIC's three-game win streak, blanking the Yellow Jackets in the week's finale.
AIC returns to the Northeast and faces Mercy University on Saturday, March 22 for a two-game set.
