Softball sweeps Slippery Rock, Lake Erie on third day of Florida action
CLERMONT, Florida - The American International College softball team defeated Slippery Rock University 9-5 and Lake Erie College 10-0 in a five-inning run-rule game on Thursday, March 13.
AIC is 2-4 to start the season.
The Slippery Rock game was a back-and-forth battle that saw three lead changes early on before AIC was able to put it away. The Rock jumped to a 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the first, but Julia Krijgsman led off the second with a double and Taylor Murphy drove her in with a base knock. Murphy swiped second and ultimately scored on an error at first base to give AIC a 2-1 lead.
The Rock tied the game with a one-out RBI double in the third, and AIC scored to retake the lead in the fourth, with an RBI single by Lauryn Ramalho that drove home Brooklyn Cividanes. Back-to-back home runs to lead off the fifth pushed the Rock up one, but Krijgsman and Ayala both singled home runs in the home half.
In the sixth, AIC broke it open; Destiny McGrath doubled, Belen Benito reached on an error, and Sammy Sanchez walked. Murphy socked a triple to bring them all home, and Cividanes drove her in with a base hit as well, pushing AIC's lead to 9-4. The Rock scored once in the seventh for the 9-5 final.
Trinity LaValley pitched the final three innings and earned the win, allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts.
In the second game, AIC jumped to a 3-0 second-inning lead with a two -run double by Morgan Bemont after Krijgsman doubled, Ayala singled, and Cividanes walked. Two hitters later, Ramalho doubled to score Bemont.
AIC loaded the bases again in the third, with McGrath walking, Nevaeh Trejo singling, and Sanchez walking. Krijgsman doubled to drive home two, and after Ayala and Cividanes both hit to reload the bases, Bemont knocked a run home on a sacrifice fly before Isabella Viola drove in a run with an RBI single. Ramalho and McGrath followed with run-scoring singles of their own, giving AIC a 9-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets capped the offensive explosion in the fourth, loading the bases again on two walks and a single, and Benito smacked a ball to right to push Sanchez home for the 10-0 result.
Gabrielle Lambert went the distance in the win, allowing four hits in five shutout innings with three strikeouts.
