Women's lacrosse earns conference win at Saint Michael's; Bis breaks CT record
COLCHESTER, Vermont - An early start did not faze the American International College women's lacrosse team, which won a Northeast-10 Conference battle with Saint Michael's College 18-15 on Saturday, April 22.
AIC is now 3-10 overall and 1-9 in the NE10.
Early on, AIC looked like it would run away with the game as Kathryn Moody scored just 43 seconds in on a feed from Anevay Rice and then Gabrielle Walz scored twice in 16 seconds to push AIC ahead 3-0 just 1:38 into play. The Purple Knights battled more evenly from thee, but Sam Giordano, Isabelle Stone, Jordyn Galgay, Antonella Mikolyuk, and Moody each scored again before the period expires, with Galgay setting up stone and Giordano finding Moody; after one, AIC led 8-4.
Galgay and Stone both struck in the first 1:09 of the second, but the Purple Knights took charge of the rest of the period, scoring five of the next six with only a connection from Galgay to Moody breaking up the run. Fortunately for AIC, Moody and Stone both hit the cage in the final 33 seconds of the frame, evening up the scoring for the quarter and sending AIC to the locker room ahead 13-9.
The gap did shrink in the third as the Purple Knights outscored AIC 4-2; Hannah Rinehart netted a goal from Stone, and Walz potted one late in the period.
The Yellow Jackets needed to put the Purple Knights away, ad did early in the frame. Stone was open for a feed from Mikolyuk for a finish at 2:47, and Giordano set up Moody at 5:41 to push the lead back to four. The hosts scored twice more, but AIC's defenses hld, and Galgay found Moody one more time to ensure the win as the Yellow Jackets took the game.
Moody's six goals led the team; Galgay and Stone each had five points in the win.
On the defensive side, Madi Bis caused two turnovers, giving her a program-record 72 for her career. She broke the mark previously set by Cheyenne Carden '15, who had 71 across her All-Conference-winning career.
Marissa Long made 12 saves to earn the win.
