Ramirez nets 100th hit, but Baseball falls to Bentley
SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - A big third inning helped Bentley University overcome an early deficit and defeat the American International College baseball team 10-6 in a nonconference matchup on Wednesday, April 16.
AIC is now 12-16 on the season.
The Yellow Jackets struck first on an infield hit by Yeudy Ramirez, who stole second and then scored on a Josh Frometa double. Nick Serce walked, and Frometa swiped third on the pitch, and then scored on an Aidan Streeter single to give AIC a 2-0 lead.
Cole Patterson led off the second with a hit, and he stole second, allowing Ramirez to drive him home with a knock through the middle. However, in the third, the Falcons flipped the game around, loading the bases with no outs and scoring four times in an inning that included a pair of doubles, a double steal, and a two-run single. They added two more the next inning as well, with a double and two singles.
AIC did get one back in the fourth, as Patterson and Ramirez reached on free passes. Frometa bounced to the shortstop, who was able to get Ramirez at second, but the throw on to first sailed away, allowing Patterson to score. Patterson also created a run in the fifth, working a bases-loaded walk after Kiernan Caffrey led off the frame with a triple.
Bentley extended its lead by a run with a two-out rally in the sixth on a double and a single, but AIC pulled back within one in the eighth. Ramirez led off with a single up the middle for his 100th career hit, and swiped second. After Leandro Guevara singled to put runners at the corners, Serce bounced to second and it was mishandled, making everyone safe and allowing Ramirez to reach the plate.
Bentley put the game out of reach in the ninth, with three walks and a sacrifice fly scoring a run, and a base hit followed by multiple wild pitches plating two more for the 10-6 final.
Apart from working a pair of walks, Serce also was AIC's most impressive pitcher, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out four, including sitting the side down swinging in the seventh. The third strikeout gave him 200 combined pitching punchouts against collegiate-level opposition between the NCAA and summer collegiate ball.
AIC opens a four-game series at Southern Connecticut State University with a pair on Friday, April 18 beginning at noon.
