Day hits 100 points in Senior Night setback to Franklin Pierce
SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College women's lacrosse team fell 20-17 to Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, April 15.
AIC is now 2-9 overall and 0-8 in the NE10.
Sam Giordano started the scoring just 29 seconds into the game, a quick start for a game that had been delayed by lightning for nearly two hours. The first frame was unusual, featuring six yellow cards and three disallowed goals; it ended 4-4 as Gabrielle Walz, Antonella Mikolyuk, and Liz Day each scored, the last on a crease roll with just eight seconds remaining.
The second was a quarter of runs, opened by the Ravens with two quick goals. However, AIC scored three in a 1:55 span, as Mikolyuk set up Kathryn Moody and then scored one of her own before Walz added another to give AIC the lead. The Ravens countered with four in a 3:35 span before Mikolyuk found Moody again for a strike with 1:32 left in the half.
Out of the break, the Yellow Jackets tied the game quickly, with Walz and Day scoring just 26 seconds apart less than two minutes in. However, the Ravens controlled the rest of the third, scoring six of the remaining seven goals, with the run only broken up when Walz set up Moody with 5:59 left.
The Ravens added two more early in the fourth, and those proved decisive. AIC pushed for a comeback, with Walz striking twice more, as did Isabelle Stone; Day netted two as well, with her third of the game also serving as her 100th career point. However, the Ravens hung on for the 20-17 win.
AIC next plays Pace University on Tuesday, April 18 at 4:00 p.m.
